DIOCESE OF VARANASI

Fullness in Truth

Welcome to

Diocese of Varanasi

Though a small Diocese, Diocese of Varanasi is in a significant way a picture of Mother India. The very name of this Holy City conjures up the apex of the spirit's endeavour in Hinduism. Sarnath reminds us of Dharma Chakra Pravartana of the Buddha. The two districts, in the west and to the east, Jaunpur and Ghazipur, evoke a pair of twin and refined kingdoms of the Muslim era. The history of the diocese remembers with gratefulness the outcome of the Capuchin missionary endeavour to Tibet in the 1700's, as an epic in the history of the Church.

Bishop's Message

My dear Fathers, Sisters and Brothers, Grace, Mercy and Peace of Christ Jesus our Risen Lord ! As we progress on our journey through the Year of Mercy, in the month of May, let us turn towards the Virgin Mary, the Mother of Mercy. “No one has penetrated to the profound mystery of the Incarnation like Mary; her entire life was patterned after the presence of “mercy made flesh”, says Pope Francis (MV.24) Let us follow a beautiful meditation on Mary along with Pope himself. Three words sum up Mary's attitude: listening, decision, and action. These words point out a way for us too as we face what the Lord asks of us in life.

Pope's Message

Dear Young Friends, The Church is celebrating the Holy Year of Mercy, a time of grace, peace, conversion and joy. It is meant for everyone: people of every age, from far and near. There are no walls or distances which can prevent the Father’s mercy from reaching and embracing us. The Holy Door is now open in Rome and in all the dioceses of the world. This grace-filled moment also concerns you, dear young people. I encourage you to take an active part in this celebration and to realize that each of you is a child of God (cf. 1 Jn 3:1). I would like to invite you, one by one, calling you by name, as Jesus does each day. For you know that your names are written in heaven (Lk 10:20), in the heart of the Father, that Merciful Heart which is the source of all reconciliation and kindness.
